Hotel Minerva, Sorrento Italy
★ ★ ★ ★
A charming hotel which dates back to 1875, one of the oldest in the area. Interiors are intimate and traditional and the elevated terraces have commanding views of Sorrento, the sea and Mount Vesuvius. Rooftop pool has several levels for sunbathing and an appealing little snack bar. Plenty of low-key entertainment is provided in the evenings but guests can walk into Sorrento for more choice. Two small beaches are within walking distance.
Most guests are from the UK and USA. Suited to couples and individuals who will appreciate the quality, service and superb views.
Hotel Minerva in Sorrento is on the busy main coastal road, in an elevated position stepped up the cliff face overlooking the sea, Mount Vesuvius and coastline. In a line of other hotels a 10-minute walk from the town centre. Bus stop is opposite.
The nearest beach area is in Marina Grande, a fishing village on the edge of the historic centre. Narrow stretch of dark sandy beach, known as ‘Tony beach’, has wood-decked jetties and chargeable sunbeds and parasols. Public beach does not charge an entry fee. Access to the seafront is via steps from the historic centre or a 10-minute walk down from the main street.
Top-floor tiled pool terrace has superb sea and town views and sunbeds with facial shades on one side of the square 7-metre pool. More sunbeds are on a lower level terrace and a whirlpool is by the reception.
