The nostalgic surroundings, offer many reminders of Madeira’s hey day, when travel was glamorous and guests dressed up to board a ship and arrive at this destination in its own right.

George Bernard Shaw learned to dance the tango here and Winston Churchill painted. Attracts many visitors calling in for afternoon tea on the terrace and those trying to see how the other half live.

The grounds are particularly spacious although there are many steps and cobbled paths.



A pink, irregular mansion like, landmark building with many extensions added over the years, with the original property dating back to 1891.

The majestic and stylish terraces enjoy sweeping views over the sea to the distant port and beyond. A small courtyard greets new arrivals with a narrow front entrance and an Italian style restaurant occupies a separate building further along the road.

A wide terrace, off the main lounge is used for an extended afternoon tea ritual for which advance booking is essential.

Old world charm combined with attention to detail and attentive service prevails in the lounges bars and dining areas.

A corridor leading from the entrance to the reception alcove and main lounge has a display of antique poster relating to various historic shipping lines.

The lounge areas are furnished with deep sofas and armchairs on thick carpets. Wide corridors lead to a stairway and antique lift from which access is possible to a prestigious dining area with a wide veranda, pristine blue and white linens and fine tableware.

An art deco style coffee has sweeping Atlantic Ocean views. A gentleman’s club like bar is intimate and well used.

Over 10 acres of botanical gardens stretch along the cliff top and cobbled paths and steps link the various sections of verdant tropical plants and shrubs, overlooked by mature trees.

A well-furnished pool terrace has more sea views and a good supply of luxurious sunloungers and thick pile towels. A lift transfers guests down to a lower seawater pool area and another more intimate sun deck at the edge of the ocean.

The well-equipped spa offers a generous array of health related treatments for those that do not look at price lists.


Area Type: On the tall cliff tops, beside the main coastal road leading SW away from Funchal towards the Lido area. The property may be approached by sea to its tiny quay, once used by launches collecting passengers from the passing cruise liners. There is a good selection of shops and eateries by the Lido, 350m away and a small selection of outlets, including a smart ice cream parlour, on the opposite side of the road, 100m towards Funchal centre. Bus stop outside the entrance.
